CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Duncan turned to me and held his scythe aloft. The soft glow illuminated the narrow staircase that wound its way out of sight. “Hurry. They’re probably hungry enough to gnaw through the stones to get at us.”

I pressed one hand against the wall and eased myself down the stairs. The scrabbling of our enemies receded into the foreground until it vanished altogether, leaving us alone with only the echoing sounds of our footsteps.

I couldn’t take the silence for very long. “So what can’t that scythe cut through?”

“Nothing.”

I turned my head slightly and raised an eyebrow at him. “Nothing? It cuts through everything?”

He nodded. “Everything except death, which has already felt the cut of its blade.”

“So phantoms are immune?”

Duncan pursed his lips as he stared into the abyss ahead of us. “Unfortunately, yes, which is why I have my other form to deal with them.”

“So roasted phantom is sometimes on the agenda?” I mused.

“Quite.”

“That must smell nice.”

“Like a charnel house.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Um, yum.” We continued our hurrying down the stairs, and after the fifth go-around unease began to sink into my thoughts. “You don’t happen to know where we’re going, do you?”

“Down.”

I snorted. “Very funny, but I meant whether we’re going to end up somewhere other than Eva’s house, like Timbuktu.”

“If her magic does extend beyond the perimeter of her house we’ll know when we’ve reached the edge of her Point.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “How?”

“Unless it’s my point, we’ll find a barrier of magic that won’t allow us to pass.”

I tilted my head to one side. “Why can’t we pass? Don’t the others want us to help them?”

“No.”

He used such a firm tone that I paused and half-turned to him in surprise. “Why not?”

Duncan’s face was a picture of stiff irritation. “We Keepers are not on friendly terms with one another, as you have seen for yourself.”

“But don’t you need to be?” I insisted.

Duncan’s expression tensed. “There are. . .disagreements amongst us over how best to protect the Land, and we have had our past feuds that haven’t been resolved.”

“Any hope of them being resolved?”

“No, but we should keep moving,” he suggested as he nodded down the stairs. “I smell the air changing just a little further down.”

I frowned, but continued. After a few more turns the steps ended and we found ourselves staring down another long corridor. The floors and walls were still stone, and a few wooden doors hung on either side of the hall.

I had gone a few steps forward when I paused and turned my left ear down the hall. “Do you hear something?”

Duncan paused behind me and I could see the concentration on his face. “Yes. It’s coming from the end of the hall.”

I squinted at the mentioned location. “I don’t see it.”

“I do,” he assured me as he moved into the lead with his scythe raised high.

I scurried after him and noticed his eyes glowed quite brightly in the dim light. A sneaky suspicion invaded my mind. “Do you really need that scythe to see in the dark?”

“No.
